What if I can’t buy a house but still want to invest in real estate?

 

That’s a real question a lot of people ask — and the good news is, the answer is yes, it’s possible. You don’t have to own a house or a rental property to start benefiting from real estate.

Enter something called a REIT — short for Real Estate Investment Trust.

Think of a REIT as a company that owns and manages income-producing properties. These could be apartments, shopping centers, office buildings, or even modern spaces like data centers. Instead of you personally buying a building, you buy shares of the REIT.

Here’s the part most people like: in return for owning those shares, you get a slice of the rental income — very similar to earning dividends from stocks. Since REITs are traded on the stock market, you can start small (much less than a down payment on a house) and you can sell your shares whenever you need to.

Starting a rental property business through crowdfunding offers an easy entry point into real estate investing without being tied down by time-consuming calls about leaky faucets and late rent checks.
